Au Pair Agency with a fresh approach

Interview questions, tips

After looking through the files of potential candidates, you need to make sure that your new au pair / mother’s help will easily fit in to the family, considering both your family lifestyle and their character.

The best way to do that is to interview them over the phone.  Many families also use Skype, as it gives you the opportunity to speak to the candidate ‘almost’ face to face if you choose to.  Please bare in mind that you are interviewing them in a language which is not their mother tongue, they may be nervous and they might not express themselves naturally initially. Speaking slowly when required will help to make the most of the conversation.  Helping to build a friendly rapport will always help put both parties at ease and lead to the best and most insightful interview process.  As with most job interviews, it is a 2-way process.

We believe it is best to start the interview by giving a short insight into your family life, talking about your children, the area where you live and then to move on to talking about the kind of tasks she will be asked to undertake. Then double check all the information what you can find in her application file such as age, skills, childcare experience and try to find out a little more about her personality and interests.

In terms of assessing the match and suitability for the role, we think the below list should offer some ideas on questions to ask the candidate.

  • What aspect of our family did you like the most?
  • What were the ages of the children you have looked after before
  • What were your main tasks and duties?  What did you enjoy the most?
  • Are you happy to do light housework (general cleaning, ironing, emptying dishwasher, etc)?
  • What household duties do you do at home now and which ones do you really not enjoy?
  • How would you describe your personality?
  • What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
  • Tell me about your driving experience?
